Since March 11, 2011, Japan has faced a triple disaster of earthquakes, tsunami, and ongoing nuclear radiation caused by the 2011 Sanriku Coastal Tsunami Earthquake (named the Great East Japan Earthquake by the Japanese government). As scholars, what can we do to understand and help the victims of the disaster in the Tohoku region of Japan? As a Christian institution of higher learning committed to improving Japanese society and Japan’s relations with other countries, J. F. Oberlin University has decided to host an international symposium on the Sanriku Tsunami in October 2012. The symposium, conducted entirely in English, will be held under the auspices of J. F. Oberlin’s Institute for International Studies. It is intended to communicate to the world Japan’s political, economic and social responses to the disaster.
